Singapore companies raise awareness with green projects

Global energy consumption is expected to double by 2050, and consumers and businesses are becoming increasingly aware of the impact such high energy usage will have on the planet.

Some firms are implementing projects to become more environmentally friendly, and at the same time, substantially cut costs, while some are even planning to double spending on research and development into green technology.

My opinions:

1) I think that it is a good idea that Singapore is raising awareness about our environment. We should definitely be more environmentally friendly as it is a place where we live in and so we should make sure that it is at its best condition.
Singapore, I am sure, is trying its best to raise this kind of awareness to the citizens. For example, Earth Hour was conducted and citizens were strongly encouraged to switch off all their electrical appliances, so as to save electricity and most importantly, save our environment. Other than that, schools also conduct recycling exercises, for students to do their CIP hours by collecting newspapers and recycling them. There is also a campaign going on, 'Saving Gaia'. It is a campaign conducted by the Mediacorp to educate and engage viewers on environmental problems and solutions. This is one of the good ways to raise more awareness among the citizens of Singapore, in saving our environment.

2) I think it is very important we each try our best to save our environment in every way we can as we can certainly make a difference to our environment if we try. Global warming is also emerging and it may cause great damage to our environment. It is getting hotter everywhere, even if we are in a room with an air-conditioner. Other than that, we should also practice the 3Rs in our daily life - Reuse, Reduce and Recycle. One way to reuse water is to collect the water we use to wash our vegetables, to water the plants. A way to practice 'reducing' is to switch off the lights when not in use, or any electrical appliances. That way, we can save more electricity and reduce the usage of it. Finally, to 'recycle', we can always throw into the recycling bins any used plastic, metal or papers.
I think everyone should play a part in saving our environment as without it, we would not be able to live too.

--Driven by Greed: Why people fall prey to scams--

summary

People falling prey to scams - a result of their greed. The greed of the victims cloud their better judgement after taking phone calls congratulating them on winning lottery and offering handsome commissions for doing next to nothing. Especially in the economic crisis, people will give up something to get a bit more.
Nine members of a scam 'syndicate' were jailed by a Hong Kong court. They had altogether tricked 12 people worldwide into depositing S$2.6 million into 10 Hong Kong bank accounts.

my opinions:

1) The lotteries may offer you great prizes or commissions. However, they are definitely not worth it to give it a chance. Anything could happen, if people are not careful or alert. If I were the one who received one of those phone calls, I would avoid them and be careful not to reveal any details about my whereabouts, or anything about me. I would also not accept any of their offers given, just in case. I am sure news related to scams have been published in newspapers and mentioned in news. The people should give attention to these kind of news, as they concerns them too so in case they are one of them to be called, they would know what to do and not get tricked or taken in by the offers given. Other than giving offers and trying to convince the person to deposit money, these people also call and tell the person that their children or one of their love ones had been kidnapped. The person will also be asked to give a ransom, even though actually their family member mentioned was still safe, maybe out or still at work. If a person were to get a call like this, I think the person, firstly, should not panic as it is not yet confirmed that his/her family member is really kidnapped. The person should also try contacting the person who is so-called 'kidnapped', then the police. People should be careful, take precaution and think through before doing something in situations like this.

2) The 9 members of a scam 'syndicate' should, for once, think through on what they are doing. They are definitely doing the wrong thing. They are cheating people for money and doing a crime. One crime may lead to another, then another. They may end up doing something very serious. Also, they should think of the people who they have tricked into giving their money all to them. If the people are not so rich, they may be suffering or having financial problems because of these 9 members. If the 9 members did all these out of desperation for money, it means that they had suffered from financial problems too, thus they should be able to understand what the victims are going through. Now, the members should repent and turn over a new leaf. They should think of others and think through properly before doing something.

NEWS!

NEWS
1)The Ministry of Manpower is cracking down on the dormitories of the foreign workers.Surprisingly, they found out that hundreds of them have not met the health standards the Ministry was looking for during their checks. Some were fined. Those dormitories that weren't up to standards were too overcrowded and extremely dirty.
My Opinion:
--I think this is totally disgraceful, to think that foreign workers, working in Singapore, have been given such a dirty and disorganised place to stay in. To me this isn't fair at all, as workers are human beings too. If we can live in a clean, organised home (or maybe dormitory for them), why cant them?? I also think that it was good that the Ministry of Manpowere did the check, if not they wouldn't have found out this. They should do more checks in future to make sure the dormitories are appropriate for the foreign workers to stay in. I hope this won't repeat again. (:

2) The smoking ban will be extended to all indoor public places and some outdoor places by January 2009. Some outdoor places, like playgrounds and markets, will be smoke-free next year. Others include lift lobbies, shopping malls car parks and non-air-conditioned shopping malls.
My Opinion:
-- I think this is good news, for us who leads a smoke-free lifestyle (: Since smoking is bad for our health,it is good that most of the places will be smoke-free. Not only is smoking bad for our health, for our wallets too!
We would need to pay quiet an expensive amount for one packet of cigarettes. If you calculate a whole year expenses of cigarettes, the amount will surely be expensive. Now we can go to most of the places without breathing in second-hand smoke.(:

pls comment guys! i'll appreciate it loads^^ ty ty..

okayyyy
below are 4 pieces of news altogether...
i have been writing the news for the past few wks
(when i didnt have the internet connection)
^^
erm soooooo
heres 2 more pieces of news ^^

1) Mumbai terrorists strikes. The famous Taj Mahal was attacked, including its hotel. A lot of innocent lives were killed and a lot suffered. The Indian police on Tuesday released the names of nine suspected gunmen killed in their deadly attacks in Mumbai , reiterating that all of them came from Pakistan.

MY OPINION:
It seems as though these terrorists have no hearts at all. They killed a lot of ppl and had the heart to make others suffer. They caused a lot of chaos. I think they should be arrested as soon as possible as surely they are vry dangerous ppl. I certainly dont understand why terrorists would always want to attack places. They actually dont think of getting caught and arrested or sentenced to death. It is as though they think too highly of themselves of NOT getting caught or they're not scared of death or any punishment and just want to be satisfied with what they had done. I wish all these terrorism would just stop as it is really giving inconvinience to everyone. It doesnt bring any good to anyone - us, nor the terrorists. I am sure even if they DONT get caught, they'll have to get into hiding so that they wont get caught and I am sure that that is definitely not as convenient as living without the need of hiding. I really wish these kind of things would stop and i wish some ppl would just learn to think straight.

2) Singapore excels in Science and Mathematics once again.
Singapore students have again done well in sci and maths at an international study.

MY OPINION:
this is really great news^^
it also applies to us, students. all of our success that we've done in our exams (:
this shows that Singapore is doing vry well in educating us students^^ so we wont have to worry abt being taught the wrong way just as long as we work hard too ((: sci and maths are quiet complex subjects, i guess. but Singapore seems to have excel quiet extraodinarily in educating us so that we achieve great results! For Science, Singapore ranked TOP for primary and secondary levels! I think that Singapore is really striving and is becoming quiet succesful. I hope this success wont just end here ^^

OK! there u have it...im gona post nxt wk or sth kk...hehehs...

other 2 pieces of news...

^^

1)6 men was arrested for suspection of involvement with loansharking. The police then did an islandwide operation on loanshark syndicates.

MY OPINION:

I am totally against loansharking, as they are against the law and sometimes can be disturbing to others. What i mean is, that they do all sorts of things to ppl who own them money and havent paid bck. I also wish that ppl would just stop owing money from loansharks. By doing this, they are actually encouraging the ppl that are involved in loansharking activities to continue doing illegal business. Also, i think the police has taken the right decision by conducting the islandwide operation. The ppl involved in loansharking thn would have a chance of getting caught and loansharking activities could be decreased.

2)A man was killed in a clash between pro- and anti-goverment supporters in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai.

MY OPINION:

In my opinion, everyone should be agreeing to have a government and i can't think of any reason why they would be supporting for an anti-government. Without a government, im sure the country wouldnt be succesful. Without a government, there wont be laws and then ppl would start commiting crimes. They should also think of the tourist there. They are showing and telling the tourist that that place isnt a good place to have a holiday or to even visit. I especially is against the violence that they cause while they are having this big protest. I think, whatever it is, violence should NOT be involved. It just creates chaos and unfairness to some ppl who doesnt deserve to be killed, like the man who died.

oooook...erm..HI^^
havent been posting..yeah, i know
sry..cuz i was on holiday, and my internet connection totally cant be used after that..
so, yeah...im lstarting a bit later..or WAY later.
but, heres the news!

1) White Tigers from The Singapore Zoo killed one of the cleaners there. The cleaner was seen acting suspiciously and was saying 'goodbye' to one of his friends there before they got news that the cleaner was killed. The Singapore Zoo is keepting the White Tiger exhibit closed for a few more days to monitor the tiger's stress levels.

MY OPINION:
I think it is good that the zoo is closing the exhibit for a few more days. In that way they can monitor the stress level of the tigers. I also strongly think that this must be a suicide case, and the tigers have no fault since it is natural and obvious that if someone who isn't trained to do the job with tigers just go into the area and provoke the tigers or something the tigers WILL attack him. The man was also said to be acting suspiciously and saying 'goodbye' to his fellow friends. This proves that he was intentionally going to go into the area where the White Tigers were and was trying to get himself attacked, then killed. I think people shouldn't do this kind of things like commit suiciding because it gives problems to residents and other ppl around. They should instead, if they have any problems, pluck up the courage to face the problems other than suffer horrific death or suicide.

2)On February 22 next year, Singapore's first mass cycling event on public roads aims to attract 5,000 participants

MY OPINION:
hmm...to me, this is quite a great event that is going to happen. It encourages a healthy lifestyle among us. Also, this will give a chance for some people to practice long distance cycling. However, maybe this even may be a cause of trafiic jams.

SOOO..there!
i'll post more after this.
im posting all the news that i can get 2day(if i have time)
cuz, as i said, im WAY later thn the rest of u guys..

>>>I was sulking my way home. How could that happen??? How can that happen to me??? My heart felt heavy all the way home and I could not stop thinking about what had just happened to me. Flashes of memories flooded through my mind as one of the worst experiences ever...
>>>I was seated in Chemistry class, listening to Mr Richard's monotonous lecture. Finally the bell rang and I was dashing out of the classroom when I felt a hand pushing my back, shoving me forward. I stumbled and almost tripped. I was enraged. Who was that? I turned around, to find my 'enemy', Amy. She was the girl who have everything - popularity, beauty, intelligence. Everything, just everything. Everyone respected her, especially her whole gang of cronies - a bunch of snobby girls. Everyone just loved her. However, I think otherwise. I think totally differently. To me, she was just some idiot who got into the school by mistake, had never been pretty, nor smart at all and definitely I also think she did not deserve all the popularity and respect. But I also knew that I was the only one who was thinking about her that way. Everyone else admires her. Sometimes I wonder WHY. I mean, is she that great? As I was wondering about that, leaving in my own world, Amy shrieked, "Oh my gosh! Look at her! Look at how dazed she is! What a weirdo! Come on girls! Let's stay away from her before we become weirdos too!" I was jolted out and looked at her, my fists clenched and my teeth bared. Steam seemed to be pouring out of my ears as my insides boiled. I wonder what is exactly her problem! What have I done to her that she must do all this to me? "You're going to get it from me!!!" I said to her, wondering if I really meant it. "Hah! YOU? Wow, I am so scared!" She said with great sarcasm. The whole gang of theirs then walked away, roaring with laughter. I sighed and dragged my feet to the next lesson - English. As I was walking, I met one of my best friends and chatted with her. I was chatting animatedly and was laughing out loudly when suddenly I realised the time. Uh-oh. I was late for class! I bade goodbye to my friend and scampered my way to the classroom. When I reached the door, I peered inside. I heaved a sigh of relief - our teacher, Mdm Lim, was not there yet. I stepped into the classroom. Curiosity tied a knot in me as I saw the whole class crowding around one table. I wondered what the commotion was all about. I paced towards the crowd and tip-toed at the back, trying to find out what was going on. I got a glimpse of a girl, nestling her head into her arms - a girl with long, black hair, and fair skin. It looks like.....No. How can admirable-Amy cry? I have never seen her cry before! I guess noone had. She is also known as a girl who is amazingly tough. She was miss-perfect. Could it be? Amy, crying? My eyes widened with shock as my doubts were confirmed, when one of Amy's cronies, Veronica, came by and said, "Amy, please don't cry! Relax! Please!" She comforted and patted Amy on her shoulder. What was happening? What made Amy cry? I asked around and found out that Amy had lost a hundred dollars, which she was supposed to keep, to give Mdm Lim. It was our class' money. We collected it, so we could have an end-of-year party and it all the money was passed to Amy. But now it seemed like she had lost it. Sobs came from her as she finally pulled her head away from her arms, looking up. Her face was filled with fear and despair. For once, I felt like giving up the hundred dollars I have in my wallet right then. I had it since I was having tuition after school, and I had to pay the fees. No way. What was I thinking? Giving up all that money for some popular girl who I called my enemy? Thinking that something got into me, I shook my head and turned around as clicking sounds echoed - Mdm Lim. She walked slowly into the classroom, her hair tied up into a bun and her strict face serious. She walked to her desk, set down the pile of books she was carrying and looked at the whole lot of us crowding around Amy's table. "What is going on here?" She said, looking suspiciously. "E-e-erm....Mdm Lim," Veronica started, looking doubtful. She hesitated before continueing,"A-Amy had lost the hundred dollars you asked her to collect.." She gave a sheepish look and glance towards Amy, who burst into tears as Veronica was telling Mdm Lim what had happened. Mdm Lim paced towards the crowded table, going beside Amy and asking, " Is that true, Amy? Did you really lost it? Please don't be scared and tell me the truth." Mdm Lim was talking in a calm, slow manner, making me stared at her in disbelief. Her looks really did not suit the manner she was talking in. Mdm Lim rested her hands on Amy's shoulder. Amy then told her that she did not have the one hundred dollars with her then, but she remembered she had put it in her wallet in the morning when she reached school. "Someone must have stolen it!" She shrieked hysterically. Is that possible? I have never heard any stealing happening in our school. I thought hard and wondered who could be the one, if what Amy was saying was true. "It must have been HER!" Amy continued and to my horror, she was pointing at me. What?! Me?! What did I do?! I certainly did not do anything! Oh no. What will happen to me now? "NO! It wasn't me, Amy, I promise you!" I said, assuring her. But she told Mdm Lim about what I said to her before - 'You are going to get it from me'. That was what I said. I started to regret saying that. Look at how much trouble I had got in because of that eight simple words! I tried to explain myself, stammering. I was afraid of what would happen to me. What if they did not believe me? I prayed hard that I would get through this. Mdm Lim looked at me with suspicious-looking eyes and decided to do a spot-check. Not only was it for me, but for everyone in the class. She was walking around, spot-checking everyone's bag, wallet, pockets - anything that she could find. Finally, it was my turn. Amy glared at me with eyes filled with anger. I was glad that looks could not kill. If not, I would collapse at that exact moment. Mdm Lim checked my bag - clear. My pockets - clear. My wallet - a hundred-dollar note was pulled out. Everyone gasped. What was their problem? It was just my tuition fees! I tried to tell Mdm Lim why it was there, and for what. But by that time, almost everyone of the students rushed up to me and bombarded me with all sorts of questions and comments. I did not know what to do. Amy pushed through the crowd, elbowing everyone out of the way and going beside Mdm Lim. She looked at me, red in the face and shouted, "How dare you! It was really YOU!" Everyone became silent, holding their breath, fearing what would happen next. Amy just continued glaring at me. I gulped. "Don't be scared! You're telling them that you're at fault by doing that! Be BRAVE!" A small voice at the back of my head commanded. I tried looking at Amy straight in the eyes. But I could not. My heart melted as she glared at me, angrier than ever before. Mdm Lim took a deep breath before saying calmly, "What is this doing in your wallet, Syakirah? Please explain yourself." I had trouble telling her. It felt as though there was a big lump in my throat that was preventing me from talking. After what seemed like an eternity, I finally ended it and Mdm Lim said that she would have to investigate further and would call my parents. My heart sank. She did not believe me!
>>>For the rest of the day in school, I had to endure all the staring and glaring that I got while I moved along the corridor, sat in the canteen, attended lessons - in short, everywhere. I was walking to Mathematics lesson when I passed a group of girls, whispering to one another when they saw me. "She actually stole it! A hundred dollars! What a shame! Our school had never had a student like this! I guess she broke that record.." I heard that from one of the girls in the group. Tears welled up in my eyes, threatening to spill out. I ran away, wiping my tears away as my long hair swung from side to side. The day continued like that, with everyone gossiping about me everywhere I went in the school.
>>>And here I was, walking back home from tuition. What a bad and rough day I had. When I reached home, my parents gave me a good news. They said that Mdm Lim had called them and they had explained to her that it was really true that the hundred dollars were for my tuition fees. Mdm Lim also apologised for the false accusation and she said that Amy must have left it somewhere. My heart was lifted and I felt elated for the first time that day, after a lot of crying and intensity. Wow, what a day I had and what an experience!
comment here pls! ty xD
