--Driven by Greed: Why people fall prey to scams--
summary
People falling prey to scams - a result of their greed. The greed of the victims cloud their better judgement after taking phone calls congratulating them on winning lottery and offering handsome commissions for doing next to nothing. Especially in the economic crisis, people will give up something to get a bit more.
Nine members of a scam 'syndicate' were jailed by a Hong Kong court. They had altogether tricked 12 people worldwide into depositing S$2.6 million into 10 Hong Kong bank accounts.
my opinions:
1) The lotteries may offer you great prizes or commissions. However, they are definitely not worth it to give it a chance. Anything could happen, if people are not careful or alert. If I were the one who received one of those phone calls, I would avoid them and be careful not to reveal any details about my whereabouts, or anything about me. I would also not accept any of their offers given, just in case. I am sure news related to scams have been published in newspapers and mentioned in news. The people should give attention to these kind of news, as they concerns them too so in case they are one of them to be called, they would know what to do and not get tricked or taken in by the offers given. Other than giving offers and trying to convince the person to deposit money, these people also call and tell the person that their children or one of their love ones had been kidnapped. The person will also be asked to give a ransom, even though actually their family member mentioned was still safe, maybe out or still at work. If a person were to get a call like this, I think the person, firstly, should not panic as it is not yet confirmed that his/her family member is really kidnapped. The person should also try contacting the person who is so-called 'kidnapped', then the police. People should be careful, take precaution and think through before doing something in situations like this.
2) The 9 members of a scam 'syndicate' should, for once, think through on what they are doing. They are definitely doing the wrong thing. They are cheating people for money and doing a crime. One crime may lead to another, then another. They may end up doing something very serious. Also, they should think of the people who they have tricked into giving their money all to them. If the people are not so rich, they may be suffering or having financial problems because of these 9 members. If the 9 members did all these out of desperation for money, it means that they had suffered from financial problems too, thus they should be able to understand what the victims are going through. Now, the members should repent and turn over a new leaf. They should think of others and think through properly before doing something.
